KT746–Tusken Warrior WIP Thread

Hey all! I’m new to Krayt Detachment, but really love this costume. This costume has a CRL officially right? I’m sorry to ask such a dumb question, but in reading up on the other WIPs it looks like there wasn’t one for the majority of 2022–2024? Did i misunderstand?

There were some issues with the forums about a year ago, and some things were lost and not recovered, but we do have some good WIP threads here as well as the CRL development thread to help you out.

Hi and welcome!

The creation of the crl took a while to complete as it’s a fairly complex costume with a lot of bits and bobs to it.

Apart from the crl link already provided, there are a few builds for this costume on the forum. Here are a few links to completed costume build threads which give a good insight to some of the challenges to the costume. There are other builds you can look at but these were relatively recent cleared ones!

My seasonal depression has thawed and I’m back to my work bench now! Got excited and attached the whatnots to my base helmet, first securing in place with super glue then cementing with E6000 glue to make sure my grandkids get to see it LOL. After I let it cure i then remembered I still need to sand (AUGH, got too excited to work). So I’ll be scuffing up lightly and doing a bondo wash to see if I can get that metallic smooth finish. We’ll see what remedy I can macgyver when it comes to attaching the leather around the mouth.

Chipping away at this helmet, little by little. Filled in the holes, got the first layer of bondo wash on. Today I’ll be filling in what divuts remain with bondo putty and letting cure, before another couple layers of bondo wash. Then onto sanding till glass smooth and primering for paint!!

Wraps and leather done. Now on to headdress and jewelry/rivets adornments

That’s a good effort so far.

My only observation would be the 2 tusks you have are in the style of the ANH Tusken rather than the warrior.

The warrior ‘tusks’ are much slimmer and seem to be without the lip on the end.

Below is ANH Tusken head with larger ‘tusks’ with lip on the end.


Warrior ‘tusks’ are much thinner and seem not to have the lip on the end.



This is a warrior display model and although display models can be dressed incorrectly, this does seem to match the head in the series. There does not seem to be a lip on the tusks and the tusks are narrower than the ANH head.



It would depend if your local garrison would have an issue with this or not. The warrior crl text says ‘Cheek tusks slight taper with a narrower end section, with hole in the end’

Whereas the ANH crl text has ‘Cheek tusks have a slight taper, a narrower end section, with hole in the end. Cheek tusks may have a raised lip around the end’.

Thanks for the input! I’ll see if that’s gonna be a problem with the local garrison. A lot of the CRL says “or similar” on specifications. Is it usual to have a little leeway? Thank you for the feedback

No problem!

With any costume, the final say if a costume clears or not is down to local garrison level. Some are more strict or relaxed and it varies from each garrison.

We at the Krayt Clan develop the Denizen crls based on the references available at the time and what knowledge the crl builder brings to the costume construction. The crl costume builder is often the first to build that costume.

The crl is not necessarily the best version that costume will ever be, as more people make the costume, more info is uncovered and the costume evolves.

We would usually say to build to the references and use the crl as a guide. We have found that people can interpret crl text in a number of ways no matter how we try to be specific. So sometime the text can be a bit general with the understanding that people will be looking at the references.

There is some text at the top of each crl…

‘This is a visual guide used for 501st costume approval, not a how-to for construction. Construction details are found at the costume's Detachment website. Measurements provided here are generalized, and not criteria for approval. All 501st costumes are proportionate to the wearer in terms of size, fit, and scale. During evaluation, both text and images (CRL and Reference) must be considered. When in doubt about a feature of a submitted costume, GMLs should post questions in the Legion forum's DL/GML peer review section’.

I describe it like this, if I painted a version of the Mona Lisa and also wrote a lot of text describing what the Original Mona Lisa painting looks like, my version of the painting and text would never be as helpful or accurate as just looking at the original painting for yourself. It may be helpful as a guide though [emoji4]

As for leeway, with generic costumes like most Tuskens or Jawas there is usually garrison level scrutiny on materials and how they look, but generally these have leeway on how the costume can look.

However, with specific named characters such as the warrior, where only one appears, there is less leeway from our perspective as we feel the costume should look like the character being referenced.

Using ANH Tuskens as an example, there is a specific Peter Diamond Tusken (the Luke Cliff top Fight Tusken) where it is quite a strict build compared to the generic ANH Tusken crl which is not as strict. If you pick to make the character specific Peter Diamond ANH Tusken, it should be more precise than the generic version.

But, check with your garrison and see what they think.

Hey! For some reason, the site won’t let me upload a photo, even if I size it waaaay down. If it worked, I’d upload my pattern creation for my outer tunic and shawl, as well as my leg and arm wraps!
 

For the shawl, Crl says there are eight horizontal strips in the front, but I only keep counting seven from reference photos from the costume display? Am I crazy?

I’m better at keeping up with my local 501 squad and the Tusken raider group, so if any pictures are required, they’re on there!
