Was it hot glue burns? I’m pretty sure everyone that uses it gets a bit burnt!

Lots of people struggle with the mouth folds and it is rare that people can match the amount of folds reflective of the Tusken character they are making. That’s not a criticism just something I’ve observed over the years [emoji4]

I always suggest that very thin soft leather or vinyl can work well and to have some help. While one folds the other glues, it can yield better results.

However you’ve made a good attempt for a first go!

Be good to see the head take shape!

Yep!  Construction grade high temp hot glue.  Had a couple of dribbles burn holes in my thighs and accidentally stuck my  finger into some of that molten lava lol

But yeah, I stopped by my local fabric store for inspiration, found this super thin vinyl that looked the part and was thin enough to fold over and crease easy.  Very happy with how it behaved!!

That’s looking good!

The left splitter as you look at the head seems a slightly different angle to the other which could be a camera perspective thing and it’s a pretty minor thing [emoji4]

It’s coming together well though and the head is where most of the ‘character’ is with Tuskens so it’s good to get it right!

Are you talking about this?  If so, it’s supposed to be like that.

[emoji4] that’s good attention to detail ! I joined the crl build and discussions for this costume towards the end as I was busy with other things so only contributed to the breather and gaffi text if I remember correctly? The offset splitters are not in the crl so is a good detail to pick up on [emoji106]

Started working on the coverings yesterday.  Started off with tearing the fabric into strips and then “steeping” them in a coffee/tea bath for several hours:

IMG-5995.jpg

Then I spent the rest of the day playing with attaching the base layer (tan) coverings.  At some point my project took on the moniker “Wanda” for reasons unknown .  Wanda also got a much needed nose job during all of this.  But I’m happy with how it’s going, next is weathering and dreads…and more weathering followed by a little bit of weathering lol

Hi, it’s good to see the wraps in a similar style to the references!

I did a bit of a low tech side by side. They aren’t the same scale or angle though.

There’s a few differences with your greeblies seeming to have a bigger gap between ‘nose’ cutouts, wider openings in the ends of the splitters and thinner wider eye stalks. These are not criticisms, just observations and shouldn’t be a problem [emoji4]

Your head wraps have helped to bring more of the character out and it’s looking good so far. Even though the side by side comparison is rough, it looks like your front two head spike placements should work well!

I think the black head wrap material will start to tie the look of the character together and at a later stage the weathering of the head elements will add to the character as well.

Good to see you are able to keep momentum going for the project [emoji4]

Yeah when I commissioned the aluminum greeblies I specifically requested all of those things you noticed with dimensions and references.  Even though I was promised those custom elements, in the end I was given basic  pieces that weren’t custom at all.  I was upset and going to commission another set elsewhere but ultimately decided to forego absolute screen accuracy so I could get moving on the project.

It’s not perfect but I can live with it!  Also, gives me an excuse to make a version 2.0 down the road with these newly learned skills lol

It’s a shame you didn’t get what you asked for but it’s a good project coming along well!

I think others will follow this build so it will help them a great deal [emoji4]

Okay, so I’ve been working on some small things like weathering up the tan layer and leather.  I’m still trying to figure with fabric to use on the headdress.  I bought a woven fabric but it’s nowhere close.  I decided to try some of the cheese cloth that I bought for my arm and leg wrappings.  It’s close but not quite right.  I have some other things I want to try, but worst case scenario this will work as a backup:

I also went ahead and attempted one of the arm wraps to see how that would go.  I don’t hate it but I also don’t love it.  I hit it with a light spray of gray, but I think it might need a little more.  It’s kind of starting to grow on me now that I’m looking at it again:

Hi!

I like the weathering on the leather, i think you’ve captured it well.

For the head wraps I think the crl build used strips of bull denim and mohair.

Taken from thread ‘Warrior CRL’
[DesertWarriorDiana] - “Updated: bull denim skirt, wrapped legs; (pants), gauze arm wraps and helmet strips of bull denim and mohair.”

I can’t be certain if this remained the materials used for the entirety of the build though.

Bull denim or equivalent duck or duck cloth (depending upon which is more available where you are) are both used for similar real world purposes in clothing and bags amongst other things. These are used in some of the older Tusken types as head wrap material so it might be something like this in an appropriate weight of fabric could be suitable. See if you can see it in person or get a sample to see what you think.

As for the arm wraps, I quite like it too but at this stage it is still open to alteration if you feel it’s too light or dark compared with the rest of your costumes weathering.

In a lot of the references for this character, the arms are in shadow or are moving so how light or dark weathering should be can be a little unclear.

This image shows the arm weathering (albeit at an angle) in sunlight or direct light showing the weathering to be quite light. This however does vary in different shots. The image also shows you have captured the ‘face’ character well with your leather scuffing [emoji4]

So… there are multiple different fabric types going on with the Warrior in particular.  The tan part is definitely bull denim, or duck cloth.  The black is definitely NOT either one of those or mohair.  The black dreads are definitely more of a hand woven type fabric, but I haven’t been able to pinpoint what exactly as of yet.  You can tell it’s a tight woven material based on the way it took weathering and the way light shows through it.  I also know it’s not a heavy canvas type material based on how it flows with her movements.  I do however think there is yet another type material used I’m on the top of her head, that is a heavier material that is not as thickly woven as it takes weathering a lot more smoothly and uniformly.
But anyways, I have some more material coming this weekend that I’m excited to try!

That’s helpful, it’ll be good to see what the other material you’ve got arriving looks like and hope it will be suitable [emoji4]

Decided to knock out my rebreather today.
When I commissioned the helmet greeblies, I was given the option to add resin printed ends for the rebreather.  I decided to repurpose the eyes that were part of that commission as well, since I was no longer going to use them.  At that point all I needed was an aluminum rod and once I acquired that, I went to bending.

I drilled holes in the resin ends and kept drilling with a slightly bigger bit until I could get the rod through, that resin is very brittle.  Then I glued on the old eyes and used a scrap bottle I had to fill the gap between them.  I cut and dyed a piece of scrap leather and slapped it on there, and it was done.

 Anyways, I’m happy with it!

Finally got around to tackling some of the bigger sewing jobs, first was the underdress.  Basically I found a generic sewing pattern and altered it as best I could into something that works.  It actually came out super cute and comfy, I’m seriously considering making another one just to have the dress to wear lol.  Anyways I put the finishing touches on the dress this morning and then I decided I would attempt to pattern out the shoulder shawl.  I used some leftover cotton broadcloth from another project and went to town pinning and cutting.  Then I had a pinned together working pattern.  Then I drew on where I wanted the bull denim strips to be.  Next thing I know I’m ripping bull denim, fraying the edges and glueing them in place on the pattern pieces.  Sewed all the panels together and voila, what started out as a proof of concept ended up in a finished piece.  It’s far from perfect, and the center panel ended up a little bigger than I had planned, but you know what it passes!  I can always alter it or make a new one in the future!  After those two pieces were complete, I decided to go ahead and remake my headdress.  This time I used a woven linen instead of gauze and I am much much happier with the results!  I think it now looks way closer to accurate.  I’m happy with it, happy with all of it so far!

So as of late I’ve been kind of all over the place working on this that and the other.  This weekend I decided to start working on my gaffi stick.  It started with me going to Home Depot and wandering the aisles for inspiration.  I ended up finding a 1-1/2” pine dowel that I could get by the foot, so I cut off 4ft and then we were off to the races!  For the crook I ended up getting some finishing trim board, cut it into two pieces and glued those together.  Then I cut that to a rough shape on the band saw.  On the main stick body, I drew out my desired patterns based on reference photos, as best as I could.  I then went to town with a dremel carving those sections out.  For the spike section, I drove a small dowel into a 2ish in. piece of pvc, then slotted the end of the dowel.  I threaded a metal pushrod into the dowel to give the fins something solid to adhere to.  I cut the fins out of some leftover abs, fit them into the slots in the dowel and glued them to the pushrod and each other.  I then used some more scrap abs to make the little round pieces that separate the pole from the spike.  Then last night I hand filed, carved, sanded, and shaped the crook to a shape I’m happy with, only nicked my hand once so I’ll take the win lol.  I installed threaded inserts into the top and bottom of the pole and drove hanger bolts into the spike and crook and now both those sections can unscrew for transport.  I’m waiting on my pineapple piece to arrive, I went with a bun foot (replacement couch leg) that I will then carve into shape.  Once that is done, all I have left is to stain it.  I should be done with it next weekend!

Finished the gaffi stick, I’m not happy with the color so I very well might sand it down and try something else down the road, but for now it’s fine.
