I decided to finally try my hand at making this amazing costume, then I was pleasantly pleased to find all of this amazing information you ladies have already put together!  I am a DCA over at JRS so I have spent some time researching details and trying to find screen accurate parts and pieces.  Long story short, my garrison is doing a big group ep.4 Tusken build and I decided it was a good excuse to go ahead and purchase a Tusken helmet shell for a discounted rate.  And now the project is full go!  I spent several hours last night trying to find and start purchasing beads for the apron, decided to start on that as it is one of the more difficult pieces to source.  I snagged the choker and gloves, those were pretty easy to find, then I set my sights on the African beads.  I think I might have found the screen used ones, they at least look perfect, are sold in the correct quantity, and I verified that they are the exact screen used size…https://beadholiday.com/product/african-brass-beads-10-pieces-2/

I will be continuing to try to source the rest of the beads and chains, they shouldn’t be too difficult, but what I’m focused on now is trying to find the trinket/pendant that hangs on the apron.

incredible work, i was  only missing the brass charms but was ready to cast them myself. I owe you for saving me a lot of research time! (I had already spent far too much time searching for everything else)

Incredible Work Rachel thank you for sharing, I'm bowing out and making one, living on the other side of the world, the purchase the large amount of beads would be more than the costume.

It has begun, I just received my first wave of materials, and I think I might be able to start constructing the apron.

The knotting isn’t too terrible, the chains are by far more of a hassle

Been working on the apron here and there, I keep forgetting to post updates.  Anyways, it’s very close to being finished.

I finally got my helmet shell delivered and I proceeded immediately to start mounting my custom made aluminum greeblies!  Unfortunately the eyes weren’t quite right, so I decided to go the screen accurate route and got some pvc pipe in the correct dimensions, night and day difference!  I’m excited to start the leatherwork, but I’m happy with the progress thus far :-)

Make sure you do the leatherwork FIRST and then mount all the face components. Don't try to cut around them. If you've never built a tusken head before, I also highly recommend measuring the distance between your eyes and drill accordingly on the head. My typical order I do is:

Mesh

Leather

Greeblies

I also would recommend not actually using the rear shell. Use it as a shape guide, but don't glue directly to it. Then pop it out after you finish gluing the soft parts onto one another. Your head will breathe a thousand times better and it will look much more natural. Especially on the warrior head with that much fabric.

The build is looking AMAZING! Just throwing out some lessons I've learned on building these fellas! Can't wait to see the final product!

Thank you so much for that advice, it is greatly appreciated!  I will gladly heed any recommendation to make construction easier!

It’s not perfect, but for my first attempt, (barring a couple of severe burns) I’m very happy how the mouth leather turned out.  I think I’ll move forward with it!
