Double Trouble Tusken Build

Recommended Posts

So here we go. My better half and I have decided to do a double build. We were both planning on doing the ANH version 1 with mine leaning towards the Peter Diamond version. But know that the CRL is out for that I might go all in on that one. Again this is going to come down to the robe materials and what I'm going to use. We want to be pretty aggressive with this build and not let it get to drawn out. So this is what I've compiled so far.

Helmet Shell - 3D Printed with plenty of holes for fans and ventilation

Helmet Snout - Dark Brown sheep skin and Lighter Brown Veg Tan straps

Helmet Greebles - 3D Printed I like the aluminum and I know it's screen accurate but I'm just thinking of the weight on the front of helmet

Helmet Wraps - Bull Denim Natural I will most likely dye them to get a little darker

Gloves and Boots - Pretty much the same as the helmet wraps

Neck Breather - Making myself

Inner Robe - Osnaburg Natural Fabric

Waist Sash - Osnaburg Natural Fabric

Bandoliers - British 1903 will most likely purchase, Turkish Ottoman style and the waist style I'm thinking of making myself and does the waist one have five pouches because I thought I've seen some with more pouches on the waist

Sound System - Not sure yet defiantly some sort of finger triggers. Would like to build my own but not very good with sound boards. I have trigger systems for my other builds but they were purchased completed

Now The Outer Robe - ? So with several discussions on this I'm leaning towards a fabric called Lynova it's actually a bed spread material. I believe this was used on a recent build here to resemble the Peter Diamond robe. Could this same fabric be used for the ANH version 1 as well.

Gaffi Stick - Making myself mostly wood and 3D printed parts

I think I got everything so let the discussion begin

Thanks

This is where I'm at with the helmets. I need to rotate the eyes down a little because slots are to high. Nothing is permanently attached yet.

This is the bull denim I'm using. Going to dye it a bit darker with Rit-Dye Camel. Already cut into strips and washed it. If you look at the post before this one you can see the pile behind the helmets lol.

Looks like you’ve got a good plan!

Well done on the mouth folds, they can be tricky but you have managed to get lots of creases.

You probably already know but the Peter Diamond crl is up:

https://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming%3ACliff-attack-tusken

The wip for this crl is here:

https://www.kraytclan.net/forum/topic/7961-jason’s-anh-tusken-raider-wip/

Page 2 of 4 about half way down in the web browser version or Post #36 on Tapatalk Mentioned ‘tufted terry’ as the outer robe material and has photos. See how that compares to the material you have.

Many follow the Peter Diamond photos or film footage as it is a bit clearer but still make a generic Tusken. These will be your costumes and will be a little different from everyone else’s [emoji1303] the other ANH Tuskens in the film vary from each other so does allow some freedom in how you approach your build!

This following wip is helpful in many ways but also has a really good solution to hiding 3D print lines (many struggle with the amount of sanding required to get a smooth finish). The approach in this thread uses epoxy resin and spray paint to get a really good metal finish for 3D printed greeblies.

https://www.kraytclan.net/forum/topic/7912-bishops-anh-tusken-build/

Page 2 of 6 about halfway down in the web browser version or post #41 in Tapatalk, has a great way to get a smooth and shiny metal looking finish from 3D printed greeblies.

Aluminium greeblies are great but do have weight which could be a problem so 3D print or other materials are perfectly viable.

I managed to get a decent shine on our resin greeblies, there’s lots of good paints out there.

Sound glove. I know you have purchased them before but if you wanted to try making them a quick search found these recent threads. There are probably more on here.

https://www.kraytclan.net/forum/topic/8243-need-a-sound-button-for-my-tusken/

This one isn’t a glove but might go through how to make the sounds happen and is a good alternative.

https://www.kraytclan.net/forum/topic/8298-wip-talking-bandolier-tusken-jawa-and-probably-other-denizens/?_fromLogin=1

You likely already know that there is a search function on the forum which can help you find threads or words in threads.

Looking forward to seeing more of your builds [emoji1303]

So I adjusted the eye stalks and it looks much better to me. And I have no idea why the picture won't load straight:?

So I think that this is the same material that was used in the @Motogpnut build for his ANH/ Cliff attack Tusken but I could be wrong. The tuffs are there but some of them are flattened out most likely from being crammed in a box. I have it in the wash so hopefully it will make them more pronounced. I will defiantly have to order another one if this works out because I'm just a little bit short on material. Let me know  your thoughts.

Yeah, I'm thinking this is going to work. After dyeing, weathering and beating it up should look good I hope.

Looks really good. It’s amazing you were able to find that material. I couldn’t find anything close for a long time.

I studied a lot of the photos from behind the scenes. Like this one.

Here’s a few shots up close.

If you notice the fabric under his right hand has a distinct 2 over and 3 down pattern. All in little blocks. But his left shoulder shows an almost alternating pattern of sometimes 2 over 3 down then 2 over 4 down. Still in the block formation.

The absolute closest material I could find with that type pattern is a looser but still square 2 over 4 down. I used this blanket here.

When we got it, I knew had the closest we would ever get, 45 years later.

The pattern even matches up with the Stars Wars Costumes Book.

*But you have to be careful with these pictures. There’s a few discrepancies, like the wrap between the eyes

The main reason I tried to stick to the square pattern is that we were afraid the outer robe could wind up looking like a giant towel. Especially when the pattern started to get worn down.

Here’s how that blanket looks now that it’s weathered.

It’s weathered with fabric spray paint and regular spray paint, as well as some textured spray paint. The textured was wonderful on the tufted fabric. It really held onto the color and made it look like sand stuck in the fabric.

Your pattern will probably look good when it’s all said and done. I think the tufted terry cloth in any pattern is the best way to get as accurate as you can.

The whole thing was so much fun. We did a lot of late nights and serious studying and reading this forum to try and get the Peter Diamond right.

Your build is looking great so far. I look forward to seeing your progress. Any way I can help, just let me know.

Thanks You, But you did all the hard work to help people like me to find this fabric. Just need to order some more to keep this project rolling.  I think over time the fabric will wear in and look even better. I was originally going to build two ANH Tuskens but now I'm really thinking about changing mine to the Cliff Attach version and keeping my wife's the ANH version. We'll see how it goes and very excited to get this going. [tusken2]

I picked up some fabric today Natural Solid Gauze for the sash. Just going to do some weathering to it.

IMG_2796.jpg.58653eb05980e91d976d95e88689ee08.jpg

Also some Osnaburg Natural fabric for the inner robe of the ANH version ( I'm going to go for the Cliff Attack version for myself so different material for that)

So we had an epic fail on the dyeing of the bull denim strips. Came out to orange I should have just dunked it but kept it in to long. I'll try and remove color and try again. Although the color on the bee keepers gloves came out good.

Also, two of the bandoliers which will need a lot of weathering and there stiff as a board.
