I THINK I FIGURED OUT THE SCARF!!!

During my research, I found that waffle fabric is a thing and it looks pretty darn close to Tusken Kid's scarf.

So I'm thinking of getting some cotton dish cloths to use as my scarf. I would hack off the sides so there's no hem and dye them the proper color.

Small update:

I'm slowly working on bits and pieces of Kid Tusken when I can find the time. I very slightly modified the respirator and printed another one. I did a better job of sanding this one and painted it a metallic silver.

I'm gonna shape the metal wire better when I get the scarf done so I know how it'll sit around my neck.

I also had my mom crochet me a rectangle out of 2mm jute twine for the sling.

Thanks mom!

I also got some cork for that doodad next to the tooth. Still kinda stumped what's behind that piece of cork, but I'm gonna take a look at some pictures of different vertebrae and see if any look close.

That's it for now. I did find a thin waffle fabric bath towel at a thrift store that I plan on using for the scarf. I have to dye it first. After that, I'm hoping to work on the arm and leg wraps.

I've been working on the costume this week.

I wrapped the pants and sleeves today. Man, it sucked more than I thought it would, lol.

For fabric, I found bubble gauze at Joann's. It seemed to fray like it does on the costume.

jUXV3qq.jpg

After washing the fabric, I cut them into 1.5-2 inch strips. Fabric fuzz. Fabric fuzz everywhere.

The lines disappear when I stretch and glue the strips on the pants and sleeves.

I put a pair of old leggings and this long sleeve shirt on my duct tape mannequin.

Yes, I know it's not the best idea to use a hot glue gun over carpet.

It took a while, but I'm satisfied with the results.

I plan on weathering them a bit.

A note for anyone who wants to make this: hot glue does NOT stretch at all. I applied the glue only on one end of the strap and even then the pants are pretty stiff. It's a good thing the mannequin legs are thicker than my own. Both the shirt and pants fit fine when I tried them on afterwards.

I also made the scarf. It was a bit of a challenge. I found a waffle fabric towel at the thrift store and after dying it red I cut out a strip to wrap around my neck. That's when I realized the fabric is too thick and doesn't fold like it does on the actual costume.

So I went to Joann's and found a thin cotton blend fabric that closely resembled the kid tusken's scarf.

After dying it red I tried it on and it seems to fold correctly.

Sorry about the picture. It's late and I only just took it.

The costume is coming along nicely. I've also been working on a couple of other little things. I found a stick a long time ago and I'm slowly working on sanding it down so it's smoother. I'm also planning on painting or staining it.

I've also 3D printed the tooth again. With the first tooth, I only sanded down one side and left the other side super rough since no one would ever see it, but I realized that the tooth is backwards. I printed the tooth again in the correct orientation and did a better job of sanding it. I only need to paint it.

After that, I really just need to weather everything, finish the belt and everything should be ready to go.

How does CRL creation happen? I want to know what to expect so I can get the process started.

I've been working on the sling the past couple of weeks.

I used natural colored jute cord, which I believe was 2-3mm thick (didn't say on the packaging). I took 3 very long strands and braided them for the sling, and I used smaller pieces to attach the pieces to the sling.

fkKLbEp.jpg?1

The black pieces were all 3d printed. Starting from left to right: There's the disk, Wrapped around the sling between the disk and the tooth is some black leather cord. The tooth is attached to the crocheted patch. Next is the piece of cork, attached to some greeblie. I thought it might be a vertebrae, but I couldn't find any that looked like the one on the costume.

So I designed a piece. I'm the farthest away from being competent at 3D modeling, but I tried my best. In my excitement, I forgot to take a picture of the one I ended up using, but here is one of the prototypes, to give you an idea of what it looks like.

I'm slowly chugging along.

This is looking great! See if you can maybe expand the hole in the mouth down a bit. Seems to be more centered in the reference photos.

That’s a new saying “fabric fuzz” yeah that crazy stuff pops up weeks after you’ve been using it, loving your build thread

I weathered the mask today using a small airbrush. For paint I used brown acrylic paint mixed with water.

MIWIe14.jpg

I tried to get the center of the strips like in some of the reference photos.

I was going to weather the boots, pants, and shirt too, but I didn't have the right paint colors for that. I'll have to get some more paint before I can tackle those.

I weathered the pants, shirts, and boots today. I tried airbrushing watered down acrylic paint like I did with the mask, but it didn't show up all that well on the black fabrics. So I switched to using a sponge and applying the watered down mixture and rubbing it into the clothes to create kind of a base layer. Then I dabbed and brushed a bit of straight paint in strategic spots to give it the sandy look.

I also 3D printed the black melon using Fleasome's file from thingiverse. Just needs a little paint job.

Tried a fitting. As always, I thought I was "almost done" with the costume and realized there are a bunch of little things I still need to do.

Some things I still need to work on:

  1. Making the mouth hole bigger. Kinda putting that one off until the last minute. I am terrified of messing this up.
  2. Making the scarf shorter. It wraps around my neck nearly twice.
  3. Shorten the wire to the respirator and make it narrower. It doesn't stretch out nearly as wide in screenshots.
  4. Cutting down the leather shoulder piece. It's way too big.
  5. Attaching a small piece of velcro for each of the hand wraps so they stay in place.
  6. Need to make the dark brown belt longer. It seemed to have shrunk...
  7. Need to make the "towel" that hangs from the belt. I have sheets of white cotton cloth that I can dye.
  8. Need to paint the black melon.

I'm getting the pouch that hangs off the sling made for me as well as a piece of raw leather that serves as the big belt.

With all these quick and easy things to do, I'll be CRL ready in no time!

That's coming together nicely. Great work.

Hey everyone! I'm still alive and slowly working on my Tusken. Here's an update of the 'to do' list from my last post:

  1. Making the mouth hole bigger. Kinda putting that one off until the last minute. I am terrified of messing this up. <--Still putting this one off
  2. Making the scarf shorter. It wraps around my neck nearly twice. <--I found a shirt made of waffle fabric that's thinner than the towel I initially tried. I dyed it today and I'm going to see if that's a viable option for the scarf.
<--I dyed the fabric, but made it a bit too dark. Going to try washing it bleach to lighten it up.
  8. Need to paint the black melon. <--My first attempt at painting failed, so I printed another one. I'm going to try using an airbrush this time around.
  9. Still need to get the big waist belt/wrap and leather pouch made for me.

I have to mention you got some really close up photos of the costume, by any chance did you get any from the other displays?

I’m making a Tusken youngling based on the one in book of Boba Fett but not that specific character.  I’m using African mud cloth which is working out well using the wrong side of the cloth.  All of the leg wrapping edges will be sewed down after I add some details.
