vgc Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 I want to make the kid tusken from BoBF, so I figured I should start a topic. This is my first time making a tusken, so any help and input would be appreciated. I'll be focused on just one or two things at a time. It's gonna be a slow build for me, as life gets in the way. I figured the head/mask is a good a place to start as any. I started by 3D printing Lee Richard's Tusken Raider helmet. Hoping the proportions are right once all the wraps and pieces are on. Others have mentioned the eyes are 2" PVC pipe. The tusks are not tapered in any way. I'll prolly end up designing and 3D printing the tusks since I can't find the correct kind on Thingiverse. The headwraps appear to be duck cloth, dyed tan and heavily weathered. What do people think about the black underneath? Would it just be black duck cloth or can it be something else, like speakercloth? The neck scarf appears to be jute burlap ribbon? What do you all think? That's pretty much as far as I have gotten. I did get the gloves, which are First Tactical men's hard knuckle gloves in coyote color. You can clearly see them here: 1 Quote
Shada Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 I’m doing a similar black/tan striped mask and just used black duck for the stripes (you can buy it in black, which will be easier than dying it). Quote
angelrose13 Posted February 19, 2022 Posted February 19, 2022 Hello! I’m going to get clarification from the lmos about this costume. It may take a bit longer as the office is in transition. with it being a child, I’m not 100% sure it will be allowed to move forward. Quote
fleasome Posted February 20, 2022 Posted February 20, 2022 Wesley Kimmel, the actor is 4'5 and with the boots on is probably 4'7. I know adults that tall. Just saying, people of wrong heights cosplay people they are nowhere near as short or tall as. I have no position in leadership, but I think if a person wants to do this costume and go to all the trouble to research and create it, a CRL should be doable. Just my thoughts. 18 is the requirement for admission into 501st but I could easily see some of my short friends pulling this costume off and people at a troop would have no idea of the age of the person inside the helm. Just my two credits. Quote
angelrose13 Posted February 20, 2022 Posted February 20, 2022 I have absolutely no problem with moving forward with this costume for a crl. I think it would offer up another option for those of us who are for lack of a better word short. ( I’m 4’11). So I want to make absolutely sure it’s even allowed since I’m not fully sure. I couldn’t find anything for sure in the charter or on the forums regarding a child based character. Because it would stink if I said yes, the member built the costume, and then the lmos turned around and said no. Quote

fleasome Posted February 21, 2022 Posted February 21, 2022 Well that was on one of the acting/celebrity sites but data could of been older. If he was 4'11 during filming that means he is even taller which he didn't look that tall in the filming but of course perspective is tricky in films. 4'11 with approximately 1"boot tread is 5'. I can see site info like that changing rapidly and easily being outdated as they can grow like weeds in those teenish years. Quote
angelrose13 Posted March 11, 2022 Posted March 11, 2022 I heard back from the LMOs. We’ve been given the green light for this costume. So please start a WIP thread and update as build. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Moofmilker82 Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Good luck with your build!!! Here’s some solid info I’ve found in my research. The eyes are 1 1/2 pvc piping. The outside diameter is 1.9 inches (48.26mm) and the inside diameter is 1.61 inches (40.894mm). It has a wall thickness of .145 inches (3.683mm). I haven’t don’t homework on the length of all of the Tuskens eyes, but it shouldn’t be to hard for people to figure out, now that you have the size of the pipe. The exact boot brand is Bear Paw. The gloves are made by First Tactical. https://www.firsttactical.com/products/hard-knuckle-glove Kyle Katarn has made an accurate 3D model for the neck breather, he’s on the Facebook build group. I will have one available soon, as well 1 Quote

And thank you so much for the lead on the neck breather. The ones I found on Thingiverse aren't quite the same. 1 Quote
vgc Posted March 12, 2022 Author Posted March 12, 2022 I have bought the duck cloth, both tan and black, for the head, arm, and boot wraps. For the outer shirt, what style of shirt would that be? I think the material is flannel and I was thinking of modifying the jawa robe pattern, the one on the left. There seems to be minimal stitching on the shirt. Quote
vgc Posted March 23, 2022 Author Posted March 23, 2022 Hoping to get the mask made within the next couple of weeks or so. What do you all think of the proportions? Quote
Shada Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 I've been studying BoBF Tusken faces myself for a while now and think the overall proportions don't match other Tusken mask bases very well (hence me making my own for Speeder Rider #1). Just eyeballing it, on the screencap, the edges of the snout padding are narrower than the edges of the eyes, whereas the 3D printed snout is wider [you could probably cut/file this to be a closer match]. The nose also appears to be about the same size as the eyes on screen, but about 1.5 eyes wide on the print - are you able to print the nose at a smaller scale? The mouth hole is bigger on the 3D printed one than on screen, but you can fix that with padding. Quote
vgc Posted March 24, 2022 Author Posted March 24, 2022 Hm, you're right. It's no big deal to 3D print a smaller nose. The snout is gonna be a trickier issue. I was a bit concerned about it being too big. Now that I'm looking at it. you can see the bottom of the snout extending farther out to the sides than the tusks, where in the screencaps you can see it end just at/just past the tusks. I'm gonna have to maybe get an electric knife or something to slim down the sides. Thank you for your input! 1 Quote
vgc Posted April 2, 2022 Author Posted April 2, 2022 Alrighty. I printed a smaller nose, cut the sides out of the snout, and sanded and painted the greeblies. What do you all think? If it looks good I'll start the wrapping process. Quote
Shada Posted April 2, 2022 Posted April 2, 2022 That’s looking a lot closer [emoji3]. I’d suggest putting some of the padding inside the snout - his actual mouth hole is quite small - and the see how it looks with the leather around it. Quote
vgc Posted April 13, 2022 Author Posted April 13, 2022 It's been slow going, but I'm getting closer to finishing the helmet. The leather snout wrap took some troubleshooting. I used real leather from the leather shop. I bought a whole hide, which I thought was WAY too much, but it was only $30. I'm glad I got it, because I definitely made some mistakes. I had to peel off my first attempt. I had initially tried to make the inner snout wrap from one piece, but I realized that I could cover a separate piece with the folds on the bottom. To make it easier to work with, I soaked the pieces in boiling water and when it cooled slightly, I folded it onto the snout and clamped it down. After it dried, I glued everything down. Once the inner snout was in, it was a fairly simple matter of gluing the nose on and gluing 3 rows of leather strips, folded in half, around the outer snout. Once the entire snout was wrapped, I assembled the entire helmet. I opted to use thick elastic to attach the front and back helmet together because with 5 fans in there, it was pretty cramped. The last thing I need to do is add the head wraps. I ripped 1" strips of duck cloth and was at a loss on how to weather it. I saw a tutorial that used coffee in a spray bottle, so I tried that, but it didn't have quite the effect I was looking for. It did leave a nice base color though. I ended up using some powdered brown Rit Dye I had left over from a different project. I mixed it and put it in a spray bottle. I laid the strips down outside and first sprayed them with regular water to get them wet. Then I sprayed them with the brown dye. Then I wrung them. Then I ironed them flat. The end result was this. Not the best picture, but the wraps really do look naturally weathered, IMO. Next step is to wrap the helmet, and I should be finished! Hopefully I'll get done with that by the end of the week. Quote

The fold over is so much easier to create and the fabric does look quite earthy, you may also want to make sure under the arms are loose by the looks of things, so get some cheap fabric and do mock up. Great so the smaller Tusken is 4'11 saying that as I agree who knows how old the Jawas are.. I'm with Jenn I'm also that height but then again so was Boushh wasn't that tall either so I'm good. Quote
vgc Posted May 6, 2022 Author Posted May 6, 2022 I FINALLY finished the helmet. What to work on next? I haven't thought about it, lol. I'll prolly draft a pattern for the top and 3D print the respirator. Quote
vgc Posted May 15, 2022 Author Posted May 15, 2022 Small update: the scarf. My mom crocheted me a short red scarf. She used medium thick cotton yarn. The yard was a bit too bright red, so I dyed it with just a little bit of brown dye. I like the way it looks. Before dye job After dye job For comparison Quote
vgc Posted May 25, 2022 Author Posted May 25, 2022 Not so small update: I decided a week ago that I was gonna get a photo op with Temeura Morrison at Celebration. It's the night before I leave for Anaheim and I only just finished the pieces that I'll be bringing to Celebration. These were made in a rush and it's not perfect, but a good start, IMO. I sewed Velcro on each ends of the scarf to keep it together. The leather shoulder cape. I took a piece of hide and draped it across the shoulder of my mannequin. I carefully snipped until it seemed to lay pretty flat around the shoulders. Not very scientific, I know. The ends of the cape are held together by Velcro. The shirt. Wow, this picture makes it looks purple, but I assure you, it's black flannel. I made it using the jawa pattern from one of my earlier comments. I made a mockup first to get the lengths and widths of the sleeve right. The belts. I think they're both supposed to be leather, but I didn't have any tan leather handy, so I used leftover duck cloth from the head wraps. The respirator. Extremely messy, forgive me. I 3D printed it and didn't sand it due to time constraints. I spray painted it gray, although I think it's supposed to be more metallic silver. The wire is 4 gauge aluminum wire. Very easy to bend. This will be redone for the CRL. The boots. I used black duck cloth and wrapped them. The sling. It's really hard to discern what's on that rope sling he wears. You can make out a disk and a tooth and you can clearly see a leather pouch, which I'm gonna have to prolly hand make. If anyone has any insight on what else is hanging on there, it'll be appreciated! I didn't make the sleeves or the pants. They look like they were wrapped with some sort of black fabric. What kind? It looks too light to be duck cloth. Perhaps flannel? Constructive criticism is welcome. I know I have to redo some of these parts. I'll have more pictures of me actually wearing this costume after the weekend. Quote
vgc Posted May 30, 2022 Author Posted May 30, 2022 I got to go through the Mandolorian experience at Celebration this past weekend, which gave me some excellent reference shots, although it looks like someone forgot to put the respirator on the mannequin! Despite it being RIGHT THERE, I still can't tell everything that's on his sling! Can you figure out what they could be? Maybe a piece of cork and a vertebrae? I'm definitely gonna have to redo parts of my costume. The belt is definitely thick leather. Looks like it's the same leather as the pouch. Leg and arm wrappings: Looks like some sort of thin black fabric. Cotton or flannel maybe? I have plenty of extra flannel left over from the shirt. The scarf is different than my crocheted one. It looks like a manufactured scarf. Any idea what that kind of scarf is called or how I can find it? I had a blast wearing my incomplete Tusken Kid to Celebration. Temuera seemed impressed! Also, I was in that costume for 4 hours and I was literally walking back to the hotel when I realized I forgot to wear the respirator 1 Quote
