Well, it finally happened!!!!! We got our Cliff Attack A’Koba - Peter Diamond Tusken CRL approved on March 12th 2022.

I am so completely honored to be able to have this character approved. I owe it all to the people in my life who constantly helped me, even when it was tough to keep going.

Hopefully with the new CRL we can have some more clarity on the design and build of this most famous Tusken Raider, for all people in the future.

Not only is this character my first submission and approval to the 501st but also my first CRL. This truly was a labor of love.

I hope that anyone looking for advice or direction, especially for this character, will reach out to me. I will always make time to help those who need it. That’s really what all of this is truly about, isn’t it?

Jason, I was wondering if you had any measurements for the "U" shape of the outer robe or did you just kind of wing it.  Again, thank you.

Are you referring to the bottom edge?
My wife and I honestly just eyeballed that. We tried to match the curve of the fabric to the pictures of the Tusken with his arms above his head.

We just cut out little by little. In the end, we were very surprised at how much we took off but it matched the original much better.

(It also helps a lot getting the fabric out from under your feet.)

Thanks for the reply!  In that picture it looks like it goes up 18" or more.

 

Did you end up going with the Standard Textiles Dual Cover or Lynova blanket?  They both seem similar in texture but one is 100% (Lynova).  I called up the company and asked for a sample of the Dual Cover and they sent me an entire blanket.  Ha!  Just need one more now.

 

Also, I wish I read your post a few weeks ago as I already placed an order for my bucket with A&J.  :/  Fingers crossed.

We actually didn’t measure up at all. Because we knew the shoulder seams would be the same all the way across, we measured down with everything. That’s how we measured the buttons and where to start the seam. I can go dig out the outer robes later and give you an exact number, but you have to remember too, I may not be the same height as you and the curve may need to be lower or higher to fit your body. Although I’m pretty sure it would still look ok. I’m 6ft 1inch.

The one we got was the Lynova standard textile blanket. I could have sworn I had a picture in the WIP but I’ll add another here in a few minutes. (Tapatalk has been horrible as of late so I’ll have to do the Imgur embed dance.)

As for A&J, it’s a real shame he did what he did. He seams like such a great guy. His work looks amazing too. But I could never recommend a vendor that you have to threaten with PayPal claims to get what you paid for. Even worse when I got it all, it was trashed. Which PayPal wouldn’t cover.

No matter how it shows up, be prepared to fix it. It’s at least a good base to work off of and repair. Still, I really thought he was a good guy. Even spent a lot of time going over how to make the mask more accurate with him. Then watched everyone else that I recommended to go to him, get all their items. It was all his stuff that was holding me up from submitting. It was heart breaking to be honest. Hopefully your experience is better.

That's alright.  Don't want to put you through the trouble.  I think I got the idea.  I assume you used two blankets.  I'm 6'0 myself.

Also, do you have a source for the yukata?  I can't find a plain white cotton one anywhere.  Or my googling is off.  Ha!

 

As others in this thread have mentioned, it's a shame when vendors go off the deep end.  I've had my TK "finished" years ago but never had the motivation until recently to get approved.  Now, folks that used to be solid sources have started turning out garbage or completely disappeared.  So odd.  I really hope I don't need to go through the hassle of Paypal.  He told me my bucket would be ready during "Juny".  I guess that could be June.  Could be July.  Well within my 180 days that Paypal covers if there's a dispute.  Ugh.

The information in all the posts of this thread were incredibly helpful to me as I’ve been working on two Cliff Attack Tuskens.  My husband’s Cliff Attack was just approved last week, and I’ll be submitting mine in a few days (just need to finish the weathering).  

The Lynova tufted terry cloth blankets were no longer available in the color “champagne” mentioned in earlier posts, but I ordered “natural” and managed to successfully dye them (eventually).  So I’m adding what I learned about dying the Lynova blankets to this thread in the hopes that others can avoid some of what I just went through.

Here is a photo showing a swatch of the “natural” Lynova blanket from before the dye bath against the finished outer robe after I finally got to the color I wanted.

A couple of tips on the dye…

The first time I tried to dye the outer robe… it was an absolute disaster.  I still firmly believe that Ritt Taupe is the best color to use, but in my first attempt at dying the material, I tried following the instructions, and based on the weight of the fabric, I calculated that I needed 3 full bottles of dye.  You do not need 3 full bottles of dye.  The second mistake that I made was that the robe was dry when I placed it into the dye bath.  This was a mistake because tufted terry cloth is so exceptionally absorbent and soaks up the dye so quickly that placing in the bath dye resulted in a very uneven color distribution.  The first half of the robe to touch the dye ended up much darker than the rest, and the lighter areas were splotchy and uneven.

Fortunately, several packs of Ritt color remover in boiling water brought it back to the “natural” color I’d started with.  I then rewashed the robe to remove any residue of the color remover so I could try again.

For the second attempt, I decided to just try to “tint” the fabric using about 1/2 a bottle of Ritt Taupe dye in about 6 or 7 gallons of water.  Also, the robe was completely saturated with water when I placed it into the bath to reduce the speed at which the dye would soak into the fabric and hopefully produce a more even result as I stirred it in the bath.  This produced a color that looked exactly what I’d hoped for while wet, but was a little lighter than what I wanted when dry with a slightly pinkish hue (but I was so close).  I did a little quick research and read that a green over-dye could counter the pinkish hue… And I had some leftover Ritt sage dye from a Mando Tusken neck wrap I’d been working on, so I repeated the last dye/tint process with 1/2 bottle of taupe dye (to slightly darken the color) and a couple teaspoons of sage dye (to correct for the pink hue) in about 7 gallons of water with the robe already pre-wetted when added in (to allow for a slower and more even dye).

That’s what finally got me to the color I was aiming for… 

Slow and steady.

Less is more.

I hope this helps someone else, or at least was entertaining.
