THIS IS THE WIP FOR THE CLIFF ATTACK A’KOBA TUSKEN CRL

I forgot to show the bottoms of the boots. I used shoe goo to seal in all the fabric overlaps. I don’t want anything coming loose on a troop. I used canned air turned upside down to flash freeze the goo and keep it from running down the sides.

You can manage in high heat and humidity with the right fan system.

I’m building a fan system for the helmet. But I don’t think I’ll be able to keep from sweating with how heavy all the fabric is. Lol

I had a thread here on fans but the security update messed up all the pics.  I posted them also on the Tusken Raider Builders group on FB.  I essentially have 3 intake fans in the helmet and a large fan between my knees that forces air uo the back of the helmet via a tube.  If it is really hot the tube passes under a camel pack of cool or frozen water on my back.

Hi, fleasome’s fan guide is certainly the most detailed I’ve seen and helpful to have a look at. The fans I have just keep it bearable around the face area which helps but you will need to work out how much / long you can troop in it as it’s not an endurance challenge! When you’re done with the build wear it round the house to see how you get on. I did a few goes in mine walking round the kitchen for up to an hour to get used to the costume especially with a cycle rifle over 5 foot long. I did knock a few lamp shades!

The dye came out well and it’s interesting to see how you’ve approached this in a different way. We didn’t straighten our strips as we quite liked the curl it developed but actually your boots look similar to how ours turned out. Good to see different materials like types of glue used and ways of getting the build done. Some attach a sole to the bottom of their boot so there is some grip as might be slippery with just the material.

The amount of material might look silly initially but it really helps with the Look of the costume if there’s a lot of folds especially with the outer robes as the films show there is a lot of material. Washing will likely alter the size a bit.

Just make sure you can turn around without the material gathering under your feet especially the outer robe. Your waist sash can alter the length of the inner robe which also can give interesting folds and maybe avoid trimming. We found the outer robe material while turning with arms down could have made us trip so had to alter. Have a walk about to make sure you can be safe in the costume. Bandoliers over the shoulder may not alter how long you want the outer robe but we checked that just to be certain.

My wife did sew around the edges to limit fraying over time so that might be something to consider doing.

Good progress and looking forward to seeing more.

Excellent progress, the colour looks great as do the gloves. Just something to think about is if you are going to be using a sound glove. After I made some replacement gloves and wraps in one piece I found I couldn't get the left one on over the glove :(

IMHO machined metalwork always looks better than resin or 3D printed versions but I'd start your neck muscle exercises now as it adds a lot of weight to the front of the mask!

Speaking from experience buy some rubber soles to add to your boots, my original pair were lethal! It has a twofold benefit, you are far less likely to slip and the sole will be flat and if your trooping in damp conditions you won't end up with rising damp in the boot area!

Here's mine:

Being from the UK I've never needed fans, my fellow UKG'er @Nezhdanov is just being a lightweight [tusken2]

Unfortunately we have some issues with the robes I purchased. Apparently the CRL says

4aeea69567d89ca7967f3bd4f236932a.png

Not only does my outer robe have a shoulder seam, it also has a seam down the front and back on the same side. bfc384fb87c23fe12d5fa1c15dd5a089.jpg

So we found the original Ralph Lauren blanket used for Peter Diamond’s outer robe. We ordered a couple blankets and will begin the process or sewing our own. It’ll be a crash course on sewing for me. Thank god the girlfriend has as much patience with me as she does. So now it’s just a matter of waiting again. We were ready to dye the robes until we realized the seam issues. b57904188f75823fa71bc7053ec23dae.jpg

We also figured out what Peter Diamond’s inner robe is made of. After doing some serious fabric comparisons, it looks like bull denim inside out. My girlfriend actually called it. 692cfb7831de8b6e4972f794ddbfdc57.png

She also finished the gloves tonight. She did an amazing job

I’m just really lucky I’ve had her help through this project. It’s been a lot of fun for us. Way more than we thought we were getting into, but worth it.

@thebrighton You have the sound gloves? Are they the ones from Tramp? How do they work? I’ve heard that they don’t stand up well to sweat?

Hi,

No, I've one of these sound gloves but it looks like they're not being made at the moment:

https://www.kraytclan.net/forum/topic/5898-closed-5-sound-audio-glove-for-tuskens-and-jawas/page/7/?tab=comments#comment-79733

I've not used one of the Tramp ones but am not aware of any issues. Paul that runs Tramp is a friend in my Garrison and has probably supplied over half our members with sound units. We'd let him know if there were problems ;)

I use TRamp for my Gamo and Jawa. My Gamo hands are complete sealed latex so you can imagine the sweat. No issues in going on 2 1/2 years. I do use shapeways ring clips for my switches so that elevates the switch off my skin. https://www.shapeways.com/product/5HEB2DCTK/tramp-switch-guard-medium

Latest update:
The Ralph Lauren blanket looked great until it showed up at my door. On closer inspection the pattern just didn’t match at all. Some weird lines that would have made me look like I was wearing grandma’s shawl.

So once again back to the drawing board. Much frustration and searching the inter webs later... I couldn’t believe my eyes. I found it??????
On a post in Krayt Clan someone spoke about the fabric for Petter Diamond’s outer robe being Tufted Terry Clothe. Originally a hospital blanket used.
(Note to new Krayt Clan members, please scour the forum. The answer is probably here.)
I ordered what I found from a hotel hospitality company and kept my fingers crossed and my hopes low. Especially after my luck lately. This is what I ordered

And when it arrived I couldn’t believe it. No way. But then I held the fabric up to the picture of Peter.

Holy crap, that’s it! Peter’s is two tufts wide and three tufts up. Mine is two tufts wide and four tufts high. So ok, I’m one extra tuft high but I can’t imagine I’ll ever find anything closer. UNREAL!!

I found it! And I can finally breathe. My girlfriend and I were high fiving all night. Lol.

So, next on the list is the cutting and sewing of the two blankets we got and then the fun part, the dyeing.
I’m excited about the build again. I can’t wait to get this done. I can’t wait to submit the pics.

That's awesome! Can you provide a link to the blanket so that future Tuskens can see what exactly you got?

It’s a real shame you’ve had ups and downs with the outer robe material, I think it was the most difficult part of our builds to find and many struggle with it especially in different parts of the world.

Are you able to return the other material? I hope you can!

Hope your build starts to get easier now [emoji1303]

Been working so much lately we haven’t really had a chance to work on anything Tusken, at least until today. We cut up the blankets we got from my last post last month and started working on the seams and basically designing the outer robe from scratch. My girlfriend, who is now my wife, is just simply amazing. She has done all of the sewing with very little experience. To me, it’s turning out incredible.

Thank you brother. Anyone who will spend all her free time helping me with my Star Wars obsession is definitely a keeper. She’s the best.

Finished all the seams and sewing. Next will be the inner robes. Couple shots with gloves and without, showing width. Also extra shot showing gloves forward. Not at side, but I’ll save that for final pictures. Just happy to have made progress.

The CRL says to avoid shoulder seams if possible, so just be aware that your GML may ding you on that. That material looks like it hangs great on you though! What an awesome find!

It does make a project easier if you have help! Your wife could always get a costume too, my wife is an ANH Tusken as well as me, so you never know [emoji16]

As for your robes, looks like a good fit to the wrists and to the floor and starting to look good with the boots and gloves [emoji1303]

I talked to him already about it and he said it’s fine. Plus the CRL wants you to avoid it but it’s acceptable.

“There is one reference showing seams at the shoulders, but seams on the shoulders are to be avoided if possible.”

I also make a pretty solid case in some posts here regarding updating the CRL. And about why shoulder seams are not only movie accurate but are needed when you’re using blankets to mimic the patterns and designs of the Peter Diamond Tusken.

Thank you though. This was a heated debate a little while back, at least for me. I can’t find the fabric I need in fabric stores and the biggest blanket is around 110x96. I need double 64 inches to floor to achieve an outer robe with no shoulder seams. I’m too big for anything else.

She actually wants to be a Tusken Raider as well. The man version. So I guess this is actually a test run on how to make hers right!! Lol.
I’m very lucky to have her. It really does make a project so much easier when you do it with your best friend.

I hope we can get the inner started next week.

Just waiting on the parts from A&J Projects after that.

If I remember correctly a member of detachment staff also said your gml could take a look at the discussion we had in the new Tusken crl in relation to the Peter Diamond robe and seams. As there wasn’t an official yes/no decision, the jury is still out so you could have used that conversation to convince your gml if they were unsure. At least you can concentrate on the rest of the build now and not think about it [emoji1303]

Hopefully the new Tusken crl will tidy up areas like the seams for others!

In the ANH Tusken crl it states ‘In this period, both male and female Tuskens dress identically’ so is a good costume for all really. My wife is happy with hers! The only thing to remember is to scale things like how long the breather hangs down along with more obvious size alterations [emoji4]

So I’ve been really busy with life lately. Working a lot of hours, 60+ every week.

My dad also passed last month, so I’ve had a hard time focusing on this build.

The biggest issue has been that the vendor that I got my bandoliers and helmet from has taken over 6 months and a PayPal dispute to try and actually get the items I purchased sent to me. He says it’s on the way and I’m waiting till it actually shows up on my doorstop before I believe him. Especially since he gave me a bogus tracking number before this. You can feel free to look at my original list of vendors to figure his name out. I’m done even mentioning him.

On a better note, I picked up the Tusken stuff and started working a bit last night. We needed to get the sash done right to match the only known picture of the rear closure on the sash. I was going to try it a different set up, but it didn’t turn out the way I liked, so a rework was in order. Besides, I’m trying my best to stay as accurate as possible.

Here’s the picture that’s being used for reference.

Here’s what I’m attempting. I just need the right size grommets now. They’ve been ordered and will be arriving soon.

I think this will work much better than the way we previously laid out.

Ugh, sleazy vendors. The bane of every costumer. I hope you get it all worked out!

My condolences for the loss of your dad. I lost my father in October after a cancer diagnosis just two months before he passed. I wish the best for you and your family during this difficult time.

It is a shame you continue to have vendor issues and I hope they are resolved satisfactorily very soon.

As for the waist sash, your approach should work well, it’s almost a shame it will not be seen! We went for similar with eyelets and thin rope to tie. The waist sash can be handy to get more inner robe folds at the front where they will be seen and you can alter the height of the inner robe with it too if needed.

Hope too see more of your build again soon [emoji1303]
