Tusken Shaman build thread/work in progress

Speaking of concept art. I found this image again and it got me thinking about the "hair" again. In the concept art it's very clearly defined as spikes, even with an image how they're attached to the helmet in the right. This has me thinking if this would be the way forward, or to stick with the "bushy wig" idea from the game. The spikes are also present in the comic (although this costume is slightly different in several areas it seams, there's never a good full-body image of the Shaman, but the head appears clearly several times):

They have the appearance of being more like large quills like you might find on animals like porcupines in some of the artwork and more hair like in others.

It could be that a bunch of quills or thinner spikes close together in the low polygon game graphics resulted in a more bunched and less defined hair like appearance?

[Edit] - the comic and maybe the digital concept art seem more clear in the intention which I feel might be the intention in the game. Game graphics references have their limitations which are understandable but can make fine detail difficult.

Does ‘bushy wig’ reference appear often?

So the one other animal that's often depicted alongside Tuskens, which isn't a Bantha is a Massiff, and look at their back! First image is from The Clone Wars I believe (main concept art  for the Shaman was for a character in the Clone Wars, but was ultimately scrapped from what I could find). The other 2 are from BoBF (maybe Mandalorian as well for the second?).

the "bushy hair" appears in-game on the character model and the helmet image, and in the second concept (which seems like it isn't the main inspiration of the 3 preliminary desgns) as per my previous post.

The spikes versuon appears in the comic and the detailed main concept art.

It’s an interesting parallel to think on. AotC is where we see these creatures first I think as PM was more pot shots at pod racing though the creatures appear in both Mandalorian and BoBF.

The spikes in some of the references might be longer than the last images but certainly have that type of appearance.

I think a case could be made for both the bushy wig variant and the spikes.

The bushy wig is present on the game model, which is the main reference

The spikes are present in the two other sources and might have an in-universe explanation. These might have been the original inspiration but are hard to model for a mobile game where resolution and character model complexity are limited.

Maybe both options could be considered? As in, the CRL will day that either spikes or a bushy black wig is present? (More detailed explanation of course, but just for argument's sake)

I personally like the spikes more and feel like it gives the character more detail :)

Small update, received the faux leather and it looks really nice in person! It comes off more shiny than in person because there's a window right above my working area. The left of the second image is the most accurate compared to real life.

Gonna make one of each pouch type now to see how they fit on the belt/sash

That does look like it would suit, it will be great to see the pouches as it’ll add substance to the middle of the costume!

Looking forward to seeing how they look when complete!

Shine can be easily removed with a bit of nail polish remover if is ever an issue. It works well on leather when making bandoliers look more used. Test on a scrap piece first though [emoji4]

First test pouch has been made. A few things I'm gonna change, mostly gluing the seams after stitching in a way so the pouch doesn't look too "poofy". Will add some glue on the inside of the flap so it isn't as thick. The front will also be a bit taller so it's even with the back, and the loop on the back will be a bit lower. Here are some pics:

I also found a nice (shiny) black button for the front pouch. It's 1 cm in diameter. The leather It's pictured on has a 1 cm seam edge, which makes it look bigger.

That’s a great little pouch!

The material seems to be a good fit for both as well. Good find for the little black button that matches well!

Looking forward to seeing them when complete, good work [emoji4]

So after I'd say 20 hours in my hobby room and a few remakes, I've got the design ready for the first pouch. Now I know what I'm doing, the other pouches will hopefully go better haha. I've been struggling with adding a liner to it, but ultimately these pouches are way too small to effectively make a liner for them with my current abilities and not make it look too poofy. I'll probably add one to the bigger pouch, but tor this one and the 2 side pouches I think I'll skip it.

That’s a great looking pouch!

I’d agree and the slim version looks better, not that the other version didn’t look good but it’s better for being less padded.

The material and colour fits the costume well I feel too [emoji4]

I think the other pouches should look great when they’re all together on the costume!

I've now made 1 of each of the 3 different pouches and attached them to the belt. Very happy with my progress so far!

Here are a few pics of the parts: (in the top one, the small and medium pouches are attached as they should be)

Here's how the big pouch is attached. I'm thinking of adding some additional push buttons on the back since it tends to lean forward when worn. This also hides the buckles nicely.

Those are great realisations of the game pouches and a good solution for wearing and hiding the buckles.

The texture and colours work well!

Good work [emoji4]

The pouches are all nearly done. I also took up 3d modeling again and following a self study course on it. Thus far I've managed to model the pouch greeblie/bottle thus far and also print it. It still needs to be finished though, but it's a neat lil thing to see something you modelled yourself become an actual object! :) the screws are for illustration only by the way. They're supposed to attach the bottle to the pouch, so they'll be hidden.

I'm thinking of painting it in an aluminum color, but I'm not sure whether that'll be too light in color. We'll have to see, to be continued!

That’s great!

I find costuming helpful in a number of ways, one of which is the creative, problem solving and learning new things side. It’s great to give something a go, like you’ve been able to, and for it to produce something useful like the odd costume greeblie [emoji4]

Look forward to seeing more of your build!
