9433 Malakili WIP (COMPLETE)

Recommended Posts

ihnken33    28

with Roxy the Rancor coming to Des Moines for Midwest Comicon, I plan on completing my Malakili costume and getting it approved before taking pics with Roxy. I have until November, so this will be a constant build up until the date.

So far, I've bought the armor thick leather

Styrofoam eggs to cut for the arm and leg bands.

I'll be taking detailed pictures of everything I do for reference and guidance from the group here to help me on my build and to help future members with their builds. I'm not trying to be come an expert on this build, so I'll be bouncing a lot of ideas off of the boards here with as much help as I can get.

There are very few reference pics, and even fewer build threads going on now, so I'll be working mostly on an idea and a concept.

I'll try to cut out all the hard leather pieces for the vambraces and upper arm and leg straps on April 4th at a local armor party, and I'll have leather people there to help. After I get it all cut out, then I'll attempt to dye it. I've already figured out how to do the claws/teeth, so that's fine, but the rest, we'll see how this goes.

So step one, buy needed leather for Vambraces, straps and anything else. Pics forthcoming.

The styrofoam half eggs that were cut and dented. I just have to figure out how to seal them up for paint properly as they are very pourous. I'll figure something out.

Alright, I got half of my vambraces drawn out. What I did, was took rough measurements that I thought were correct since there is no official size of these things anywhere. I then measured and drew out what I thought, and one half of my sketch came out better than the other, so I decided to cut it in half, and use the half that looked better, sort of like a mirror effect. Use 1 side to complete the whole thing. What I'm going to do is get another piece of something, maybe a thinner cardboard and do the mirror thing to get the complete pattern, then use that pattern of the vambrace to cut the leather.

Here's the half that took me about an hour to work out last night. Cutting corrugated cardboard is difficult!

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll be looking into that this week!!! Until then, I'm still working on the pattern, with the proper supplies, hopefully tonight. But thank you Cesar!

Thank you Chuck! I'll try to post the pics of all the leather progress as soon as I can. Turns out, after Easter dinner, I had to mow my lawn for the first time this season. So yea, that took away from some of my time to post updates!

Here are the claws that were made for the vambraces. AWESOME!! An army of claws! I'll be sanding some of the bases down a bit, but for the most part, I think they came out great.

Thanks Aaron! Glad to see someone following my build. Its fun, but a lot of work since I'm building 2 sets of everything. But, a little here, a little there, and I'll get it done. I should have been looking for fabric for the loin cloth today, doh... I was at 5 different thrift shops and bought flat sheets for the belt, but didn't even think to look for the loin cloth. Maybe I can re purpose one of my brown flat sheets for a loin cloth and still use enough for the belt. I think I'll have enough. (I'm thinking out loud...er... on the keyboard)

I have a confession to make. Those pictures were taken just as got my 2nd table, so I had no time to mess it up... it hasn't been there long enough, so that's why its still organized!

A little more progress made tonight. I'll be working the rest of the vambraces throughout the rest of this week and next. Hopefully I can get them done within the next 2 weeks. As soon as my claw supplier gets back from celebration, I can get them for the finishing touches. Lets see how this goes! ONtwards to final staining and assembly!

Quick question, any idea how to get the rivets the same color as the other stained leather? Can I just paint them with the stain?

So you ask, so it shall be done! More photos. Here I put on the first coat of the saddle tan for the vambraces, then about 4 days later, (last night) I put on the dark brown to get the weathering on it. I don't know if I'm happy with it, but I'll work on it if need be. For now, I need to find a dark brown paint to paint the silver tabs. They are not taking the leather stain, so I'll have to pain those by hand. Next is going to be assembly, and finishing touches. I'd say another 2 or 3 weeks and I should have them done.
